I got to talk to Dietgirl!

Fabulous Shauna Reid skypes with me to chat about her podcast ‘Two Fit Chicks And A Microphone‘, her book ‘The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl‘ and cozy life in Scotland. Not only a podcaster and fitness blogger, but also a fiction writer and avid reader, Shauna suggests ‘Cloudstreet‘ by Timothy Winton to add to our ever expanding reading list.  Jerilyn throws Joyce Carol Oates’ novel ‘Them‘ onto the reading list heap; when is there ever time to read all the good books we want to read? Shauna says an iPhone book app like ‘Stanza’ will help file down your book list, as it downloads books to you can read when you have a few moments waiting in line or whatnot. Really, I felt like I got whisked away on a mental micro-vacation  to Scotland during our chat,  I got the inside scoop on:

Haggis

Kilts

The Moors

That’s not all! We give a shout-out to Shauna’s podcasting partner Carla and her site MsFitOnline . Carla’s blog motto is “…because fitness isn’t about fitting in” – love that!

Shauna can be found at her blog The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl. Find the very active 2Fit Chicks listening community on their facebook fan page!

In The Raw

The Because Show is a weekly audio podcast by three woman in Los Angeles, Jerilyn Dever, Amy Forstadt and Susan Wright. Listen to the trials and tribulations, the joys and challenges with automatic weekly downloads when you subscribe on iTunes. Like your friends in real life, but funnier. Here is the most recent show, Episode #32 with guest Pilar Alessandra:

We’re excited to announce the next giveaway from Two Moms In The Raw! When I was waiting in line at my local Starbucks last week, I noticed a basket filled with a healthy-looking well-designed package of granola. Delightedm I bought a pack and munched on the sweet-but-not-too-sweet crunchiness while reading the back of the package. My interest was piqued when I discovered the company was called ‘Two Moms In The raw’ out of Bouler, Colorado. I love products that are a result of moms with a vision! Particularly if they are really yummy and healthy, to boot! The company motto is ‘Good For You, Good For The Planet and Kids Love It’. I mean, who doesn’t love that? Their snacks are organic and raw as well as 100% vegan with no refined sugars. There’s a story about how the company began, but we may save it to share with our listeners on the podcast – (stay subscribed!) Shari, the founder/owner, has fabulously agreed to provide a Two Moms In The Raw Surprise Gift Basket of their products to one winner of an upcoming Because Show giveaway. We will be posting details on how to enter Oct.1st.

Episode #33: Pilar

Wonderful Pilar Alessandra, screenwriting consultant, joins us to talk about her new book The Coffee Break Screenwiter. You can listen to the show here, or subscribe on iTunes for automatic downloads.

Pilar’s techniques can be applied not only to writing a screenplay but also to tackling any creative project. She shares some insight on the creative process and getting the words ‘on the page’. Which is also the name of her awesome podcast! We also discuss a smattering of fave tv shows including Breaking Bad, Deadwood and The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman. If you haven’t watched these, find time to watch them! Also, keep your eyes peeled for the retelling of Mildred Pierce with Kate Winslet on HBO. Mildred Pierce was selected several weeks ago as one of book recommendations! Need some ‘time saving tips for a busy person’ ? We have a few, direct from Real Simple magazine. Jerilyn relays a story of ‘random acts of kindness’ on Sunset Blvd. and Amy delights us with the saga of her husband’s fateful Yom Kippur. Like us? Take that extra step and suggest us to a friend. Don’t forget to become a fan on facebook to get in on the giveaways, including the giveaway of two copies of The Coffee Break Screenwriter!

More New Shows

Welcome! Come in, take a load off! Have a look around! Join us for a mid-week review of the new fall tv shows! The Because Show is primarily the best funny podcast on iTunes but also functions as a blog. My merciless opinions on The Event, The Increasingly Todd M. Decisions and Lonestar are chronicled here. So, enough about that, let’s get to some tube talk! If you want to hear last week podcast, you can find it here or subscribe in iTunes.

Running WildeSort of funny. The pilot felt a little desperate in it’s attempt to be different/zany. Like, no nuances. Rich spoiled guy vs. eco-conscious beauty. So, I get it. It’s cute. It’s a bit of a twist that it’s not an unrequited love scenario, not the usual “man always chasing-and-never-getting the girl” formula. Because the beauty is kind of into the rich guy and they have a history. Bob says he likes it and it’s funny. I will somewhat unemphatically agree.

Parenthood I’m glad the Braverman family of Berkeley is back. In fact, this may be my favorite show on tv. I still love Peter Krauss from his days on Six Feet Under, and the rest of the ensemble cast works so well together. The set design and overall production design is fabulous on this show, and they totally pull off excellent mise-en-scene. Two thumbs up for everyone involved in this show.

Raising Hope This is another show I actually like. The pilot was funny! It definitely has a My Name Is Earl feel to it, since it was created by the same guy. But it’s a little quirky, a little sardonic. Well-cast with the talented Martha Plimpton and awesome Cloris Leachman. This show is going to do well.

The new shows

The Fall TV season has started! Three new shows premiered last night and after watching them, my response is ‘meh’. Pilot episodes are most always weak as they have to make leaps and bounds to set up plot and character, so I am willing to stick around for a few episodes to see where they go. These are all shows that Bob and I neglected to mention in our Episode #32 Podcast which you can find here:

So here is my opinion of the three new shows I watched.

Lonestar It has the feel of ‘Friday Night Lights’ (one of the best shows on television!) and shares the Texas locale, but lacks the uniqueness and nuances of FNL. A young man rebels against his con-man father and rejects his grifter life…that’s the basic gist of the story. Actress Adrienne Palicki who played the indomitable ‘Tyra’ in FNL is well-cast as a Texas socialite wife. The star is boyishly handsome, but somewhat forgettable. Keith David is miscast: his extensive  plastic surgery made him unbelievable as a fringe outsider conman. He looks too puffy and smooth! One good thing is that this show will have long story arcs, not episodic plots, so it may have some good twists and turns ahead once the storylines get going.
The Event I was hoping for more, after the major publicity hype for this series. The pilot was week. It has two plotlines, one with the President (well played by Blair Underwood) and a conspiracy and one with a young couple on a cruise.  Nothing struck me about this. Except that the cruise ship reminded me of the Love Boat. But, it wasn’t very suspenseful.  A movie called The Ruins (which was a great book first) really showed the dark side of an exotic vacation, where tourists are vulnerable and weak – here in The Event, the plotline was kinda going for this feel -but I’m not sure it was acheived. I didn’t really pay attention to the President plot-line, so that’s not so good either.
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret -Bob said he likes this show, and thought it ‘wasn’t too bad’.  For me, this is also a disappointment. I found David Cross shrill and annoying. Is that his schtick? Not. Funny. His acting chops are fine in Alvin And The Chipmunks and he is fine as a secondary character. But to carry a whole show? I don’t know.  After seeing the ‘Louie’ series on FX(wonderful!) with comic auteur Louis CK, David Cross’ pet project seems lame in comparison.

If you are new to The Because Show, we are a weekly (sometimes biweekly) recording of the trials and tribulations, they joys and challenges of life in Los Angeles, by three women trying to juggle the work/life balance. The show features unique and surprising chats on kids, cuisine and culure. Like your real friends, but funnier. And more picky about new tv series?

Episode #32 Fall TV

New podcast on the scene!

Here’s the thing. It’s hard to find good podcasts. When I scroll thru iTunes, I just look at the ‘Other People Have Subscribed To” row and click on whatever graphic I think looks prettiest. But somehow that rarely leads me to a good podcast. But sometimes it does! Like a show that can sustain me when I pop on my headphones and listen to hour after hour while I’m at my desk. And I’m delighted to tell the world if I do find a fun show- over the past months, I’ve discovered The Sporkful, Dave Hill’s Podcasting Incident and Books On The Nightstand. Now I’m adding Naptime Radio to my list. The hosts Heather and Kate are funny & fun – there’s the perfect dynamic where you feel like you already know them and can join in on their conversation. They upload 2x a month, and are up to Episode #11. I’m hoping they will start recording weekly for my own selfish reasons! The discussions surround the craziness of  family life – if you are a listener who is also a parent, you will definitely be able to relate! What podcasts have you discovered lately?

Gwyneth’s Face

Have a love/hate relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow? Me too! I applaud her for GOOP-ifying the world, because she could just sit back and admire her Oscar and gorgeous kids and rocker husband, but no, she is compelled to create online content. So that’s cool.  And she listed in a recent post her skin care regime. So that’s intersting to me, because I am also a white chick in my late 30′s so maybe what’s working for her could work for me? Here’s a list of Gwynnie’s faves:

Stella McC. Purifying Foam Cleanser

Rodin Olio Lusso face oil

Intelligent Nutrients Anti Aging Serum

Intelligent Nutrients AntiAging Mist

Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel, A.G.A. Interrupter and C E Ferulic

Estee Lauder , Tom Ford Lipstick

Chanel Automatic Liquid Eyeliner

Stila Convertible Color for Eyes

Bobbi Brown Tinted Mositurizing Balm with SPF 25

There is definitely some stuff I’ve never heard of, and definitely some stuff I’d love to try. Especially the Anti-aging Serum. Just the word ‘serum’ sounds sci-fi and hi-tech. Full disclosure: if you buy  the above products thru Amazon by clickin’ on the links, we get a teeny percentage of the sale – to help us pay for giveaway shipping expenses and web-hosting.

Rats.

Rats, we’re going to go a 2nd week in a row without recording the best mom podcast ‘The Because Show’. See how I did that? l used the words best-mom-podcast to tweak search-engine-optimization so google can find the blog easier which will lead people to the podcast. As we approach our One Year Anniversary, we may dabble in a bit of SEO and keyword spamming as well as grass roots marketing to spread the word about the best mom podcast the because show.

But anyway, as I was saying – last week was Rosh Hoshshananah or however you spell it, so in observance of the high holy days, we skipped a week. Then this week, Amy’s kid had a fever, and then tonight my kid has a fever, plus now that Susan had her baby (Hooray for the Mathot-Wright clan and their newest addition!) it’s just me and Amy for awhile.

Regardless, I do have new and notable things to talk about -but I am mostly saving it up until we record. Although the one thing I can share is that I have fallen madly in love with Louie CK after watching the entire season of his FX show “Louie” on hulu. He’s sooo funny. The show is ‘for mature audiences only’ so depending on your sensibility, you may love him or thing he is gross. But his observations on the challenges and joys of parenting are completely on point, I gotta say. He not only wrote and directed all 13 episodes, but also edited them – so good for you Louie CK! I checked out his ‘channel’ on Youtube and evidently he has been doing his own short films for the last two or three years, hmmm- gotta put the kids to bed now, more later, bye everyone!
